Top-10 of 2016: Will Stevens at the Nürburgring

Now the 2016 Blancpain GT Series season is over, it’s time to look back at some of the highlights of the past ten races. In this top-10 series, we’ll take a look at the performances that were sometimes not that obvious, but played a crucial part in the outcome of the race. At the Blancpain GT Series Sprint Cup event on the short course of the Nürburgring René Rast and Will Stevens set their best result of the season, after a faultless fight against drivers that would later be crowned champions of 2016.

The Blancpain GT Series is GT racing at its best, and even for a former F1-driver it takes some time to find out how to go quick and finish at the front. For Will Stevens the start of the 2016 season was not the easiest one, but once he and (much more experienced) team-mate Rene Rast arrived at the Nürburgring for the Blancpain GT Series Sprint Cup event, things improved a lot.

A strong performance during the qualifying race meant that the duo of the #28 Belgian Audi Club Team WRT climbed from seventh to third and Will Stevens was determined to finish even higher in the main race. Although the track was still damp in places, the Briton made a faultless start. With Enzo Ide – leader in the Sprint Cup standings – and Rob Bell – leader in the overall Blancpain GT Series standings – in front of him, Stevens came through the first corner unscathed, and quickly climbed to second when Enzo Ide realised that his team-mate was a man on a mission. Stevens continued his faultless run until the pitstop, and gave the car to Rast well within shooting distance of the leader. Eventually, the British-German duo would finish in second, just two seconds behind the winners.
