With six hours to go in the Total 24 Hours of Spa, representatives of Mercedes-AMG and Audi are fighting for top stop in the Intercontinental GT Challenge rankings, of which the Belgian endurance classic is the second round.
The 70th edition of the Total 24 Hours of Spa had an eventful night. Just before the 11-hour mark, an accident occurred involving the #31 Team Parker Racing Bentley of Andy Meyrick and the #666 Attempto Racing Lamborghini driven by Jurgen Krebs. The race was red-flagged and both drivers were successfully extracted from their cars. They were taken to the circuit medical centre, then transferred to hospital. Both drivers suffered fractures and, due to the high-speed nature of the accident, are currently being kept under observation in intensive care. However, neither has suffered life-threatening injuries.
When the race was restarted at 4.50 on Sunday morning, several cars competing in the Intercontinental GT Challenge were part of the leading pack. The #8 Bentley Team M-Sport Continental that had led proceedings on Saturday evening was not longer part of that group, for it lost a significant amount time due to steering problems.
With six hours to go the #25 Audi Sport Team Saintéloc was in first overall, with the second of the Intercontinental GT Challenge cars, the #4 Mercedes-AMG Team Black Falcon car close behind. The second of the Bentley Team M-Sport cars, the #7 Continental GT3 that had started the race from pitlane, completed the IGTC top-3.
For McLaren and Porsche this proves to be difficult edition of the Total 24 Hours of Spa. Both the #58 and #188 Garage 59 McLarens hit technical issues, but both are still in the race. For the Stuttgart brand the leading 911 is the #540 Black Swan Racing car, after the #911 Manthey-Racing Porsche dropped down the order due to extensive repairs and the #117 Küs Team75 Bernhard was parked after contact with another competitor.
The battle for the points for the Bronze drivers is still going in favour of Nick Leventis in the #42 Strakka Racing Mercedes-AMG, which is inside the top-20 overall.
The final six hours of racing are likely to see significant battles among all Intercontinental GT Challenge contenders, with much more to be settled before the winner of this year’s Total 24 Hours of Spa is decided.
