Team Profile: Emil Frey Racing

Emil Frey Racing returns to GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS for 2020 with a pair of full-season Lamborghini entries.

The Swiss team can draw links with company founder Emil Frey, who first opened his Zurich repair workshop for motorcycles and road cars in 1924. Frey was also a racer who competed on two wheels and four, a tradition that was continued by his son and successor Walter.

In the 21st century, a third generation has taken the helm with Lorenz Frey-Hilti now in charge of the racing division. In 2012 the team undertook development of the Jaguar XK GT3 and entered the Endurance Cup, scoring a maiden Pro-Am win at the Nurburgring in 2015.

The 2016 season brought a considerable investment in drivers, with Stephane Ortelli, Albert Costa and Christian Klien joining the squad as it began to challenge for overall honours. The following year the team undertook development of the Lexus RC F GT3, which would become Emil Frey Racing's main challenger in 2018.

The Japanese car was particularly suited to high-speed circuits and scored its maiden Endurance Cup podium at Silverstone. Then, at the Circuit Paul Ricard 1000km, a final-lap pass by Costa on the Bentley of Jules Gounon gave Emil Frey Racing and Lexus a thrilling maiden win.

2018 saw the team bid farewell to the venerable Jag, which had become a fan favourite during its seven years of service. The car enjoyed the perfect send-off as the #54 Emil Frey Racing crew won the Silver class title in the Endurance Cup.

With the Lexus programme also concluding, the team stepped away from the series in 2019 to develop a new relationship with Lamborghini. After winning the International GT Open title at the first time of asking, Emil Frey Racing has returned to the top tier of European GT3 competition this year with a full-season GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS programme.
