JP Motorsport confirms two-car McLaren programme for 2022, Klien to lead driver line-up

JP Motorsport has announced an ambitious Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS programme for 2022, which will see the German squad field at least two full-season McLaren 720S entries.

The team made its series debut at the Nürburgring in 2020 as a warm-up for the TotalEnergies 24 Hours of Spa and returned for a one-off appearance this term, tackling the Circuit Paul Ricard 1000kms. Its initial outings came with a Mercedes-AMG before switching to the McLaren this year, while team principal Patryk Krupinski and lead driver Christian Klien were ever-present behind the wheel.

Plans have now been put in place to field a pair of 720S GT3 crews in 2022, while a third is also an option. The team will step up to contest the full campaign, combining the Sprint and Endurance Cups to make a run at the combined title, with its line-up once again be led by former F1 racer Klien. Conversations with other drivers are underway and a "surprise" announcement could be made soon.

“We have already competed in Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS in 2020 and 2021 and were very impressed by the professional environment, the organisation and of course the races that demand everything from every team," commented team principal Krupinski.

The team's best finish to date is 29th overall at this season's trip to Circuit Paul Ricard. Its first two outings came in the Pro-Am class, while it entered a Pro crew at the French venue. A class for next season is yet to be defined, with participation in the Pro, Pro-Am or new Gold Cup categories all possible for the car featuring Klien.
